Cranfield University

Europe's First MASTERS-Level Course IN MICROSYSTEMS AND NANOTECHNOLOGY (MS&N)

Cranfield University established the first combined and fully integrated course in Microsystems and Nanotechnology in Europe. The course received a grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to assist with its development.

The course provides lecture modules in a wide range of topics intended to provide a broad-based post-graduate education in these important and closely related fields. It is aimed to educate students to go into the new emerging businesses where the fabrication and exploitation of materials and devices at the micron and nanometer scale is essential to wealth creation. A series of 10 lecture modules are given covering a range of topics, from techniques used for the design and fabrication of microsystem devices through the use of novel functional materials in microsystems to the new field of molecular nanotechnology.

Exploitation of micro and nanotechnologies will be a key theme of the course, as will education in the techniques used for the management of R&D and wealth creation using high technology. In addition to the lecture modules, students undertake two projects: a group project, designed to foster their abilities to conduct R&D as a part of a team, and an individual project in which they can develop their research and development skills.

The course has a large number of industrial companies involved, and students are involved with these through contact with visiting lecturers and sponsored projects. It is possible to take the course either on a full-time (over 12 months) or a part-time basis. It is also possible to take individual modules as part of a programme of continuing post-graduate training. A limited number of grants are available for suitably qualified full time UK students. The course leads to the grant of either an MSc or PGDip, depending on whether or not a project is undertaken.
